MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State
University men’s basketball team defeated Northwood
University today (Jan. 16) by a score of 84-67 in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.
The Cardinals took the first and only lead of the game on an
opening lay-up of off the hands of senior Avery Stephenson
(Romulus, Mich.). Saginaw Valley led by as many as 20 points with
less than three minutes remaining in the first half. The Cardinal
defense held strong throughout the half as they entered the locker
room with an 18 point lead. Junior Keithan Jackson
(Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) scored 15 of his 19 total
points of the game while freshman Chris Webb (Saginaw,
Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) posted ten of his 18 final points in the
first half as well.
Saginaw Valley continued their dominance in the second half as
they went up by as many as 25 points with just over 6:30 of action
left in the game. Sophomore Greg Foster
(Indianapolis, Mich. / T.C. Howe HS) led the Cardinals in the
second half with ten points and three rebounds. Foster would end
the night with 15 points, five rebounds and dished out four
assists.
Saginaw Valley was lead by Jackson who tallied 19 points and
grabbed seven rebounds while Webb scored 18 points and had two
assists. Sophomore Josh Eisenga (McBain,
Mich.) led the way for the Cardinals in rebounds with eleven and
also had five points and one steal.
With the victory, the Cardinals move to 10-5 overall and 7-3 in
the GLIAC while Northwood falls to 7-7 overall and 4-6 in the
GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will return to action when the host Michigan
Tech home on Thursday (Jan. 21). Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
