Cardinals Defeat Warriors, 56-53

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team defeated Wayne State University Thursday (Jan. 14), 56-53 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up.

Freshman Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) would make a three pointer with 1:55 left in the first half to give the Cardinals a three point advantage heading into the locker room.  Webb and sophomore Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) would lead offensively in the first half for Saginaw Valley with six points apiece, while senior Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) added five.  As a team, the Cardinals shot 5-for-9 from behind the arc.

Saginaw Valley battled hard in the second half, as there were seven lead changes.  The Cardinals would take the lead for good from the Warriors when Stephenson made a jump shot with 42 seconds left in the contest.  Saginaw Valley shot 12-for-19 from the free throw line in the second half. 

Stephenson ended the night with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Foster had 11 points for the Cardinals.  Junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) added 12 rebounds, and sophomore Josh Eisenga (McBain, Mich.) pulled down 10 rebounds for Saginaw Valley.

With the win, SVSU improves to 9-5 overall on the season and 6-3 in the GLIAC, while Wayne State falls to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will return to action when they travel to Midland on Saturday (Jan. 16) to face Northwood University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
