Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker to Lakers, 60-58

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley Sate University men's basketball team took a heartbreaking loss to Grand Valley today (Jan. 5), 60-58 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up.

The Cardinals led the Lakers throughout the first half and were up by 12 points entering the locker room.  Senior guard Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) led Saginaw Valley in scoring the first half with 14 points.  Stephenson finished the game with 17 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Saginaw Valley maintained their lead until less than three minutes remained in the contest as the Lakers sunk a pair of free throws to take the lead.  The Cardinals quickly responded as sophomore Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) connected on a lay-up, however Grand Valley would regain the lead and come out with the victory, 60-58.  Foster ended the night with 16 points and five rebounds while freshmen Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) and Michael Fugate (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland HS) both finished with 10 points.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 6-5 overall on the season and 3-3 in the GLIAC, while Grand Valley improves to 8-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will return to action as they travel to Big Rapids to take on Ferris State University.  Tip off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
