Cardinals Fall to Lake Superior State, 64-60

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team was defeated by Lake Superior State today (Jan. 2), 64-60 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up.

The Cardinals went into the locker room with a 34-27 advantage over the Lakers going up as many as 11 points in the half.  Junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) led Saginaw Valley with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  The Cardinals shot 7-for-11 from the free throw line.

Saginaw Valley maintained their lead until less than three minutes remained in the contest as the Lakers connected on a free throw.  The Cardinals ended the night connecting on 12-of-17 free throws.  Meijer Player of the Game Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) scored 17 of his 20 total points in the second half of action.   Jackson finished the game with 16 points and 17 rebounds and recording his eighth double-double of the season.

With the loss the Cardinals fall to 6-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in the GLIAC, while Lake Superior State improves to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action on January 7 when they travel to take on Grand Valley State for an 8:00 PM tipoff.
