Cardinals Sweep Upper Peninsula Weekend with 74-69 Win over Wildcats

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 74-69 victory over Northern Michigan University today (Jan. 24).

In the first half, reining GLIAC North Player of the Week Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./East Tenn. State Univ.)led the Cardinals to a 35-19 lead. Williams scored 13 points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor and three-of-five from behind the arch. SVSU shot 58% from the floor as a team in the first half.

The trio of Williams, Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich./Nebraska-Kearney) and Dan Genther (Laingsburg, Mich) led the Cardinals with nine points each in the second half as Northern Michigan came out of the locker room firing. The Wildcats would put 50 points up in the half but consistency from the free throw line helped the Cardinals. SVSU shot 18-of-23 from the line in second half.

Williams would lead all scorers with 22 points on the afternoon. Stephenson added 17 points and Genther chipped in with a season high 16 points in just his third start of the season. For the game the Cardinals shot 58.5% from the floor on 24-of-41 shooting and 73.1% from the charity stripe hitting on 19-of-26 shots.

With the win the Cardinals move to 5-11 overall on the season and 5-7 in the GLIAC, while Northern Michigan falls to 9-8 overall and 4-8 in the GLIAC. SVSU will return action when travel to Hillsdale on Thursday (Jan. 29) at 8:00 pm.
