Cardinals End Season With a Win Over Michigan Tech, 74-64

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team recorded their second consecutive victory tonight (Feb. 28) giving it’s three seniors, Dante Williams (Romulus Mich. / East Tennesee State University), Chris Johnston (Clarkston, Mich.), and Lawrence Ross (Battle Creek, Mich. / Miami University) a bittersweet final game. The Cardinals defeated Michigan Tech. by a score of 74-64.

The Cardinals had a ten point advantage entering the locker room at the half, 37-27. Junior guard Adam Gries led both teams in rebounding, pulling down five of his six total boards and contributed eight points. Senior forward Chris Johnston went one-of-one from behind the arch and had five points. As a team, the Cardinals shot 50% from the floor, went five-of-eight from the three-point line and sank four-of-five free throws in the first half of action.

Senior guard Dante Williams broke his own season record for three point baskets made in a season, setting the new standard at 75. He finished the game with eleven points; connecting on three of four shots from behind the arch, two assists, two steals and one rebound before leaving the game midway through the second half after suffering apparent injury.

Junior guard Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich. / Nebraska-Kearney) led the Cardinals in the second half with 13 points, giving him a game high and team high 18 points. Freshman guard Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) contributed 12 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had three steals and assists for the night. Johnston ended the night with 13 points, two rebounds and one assist while shooting 100% from the free throw line.

The Cardinals finished the season 9-17 overall and 9-13 in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 13-14 overall on the season and 10-12 in the GLIAC.
