UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Cardinals
of Saginaw Valley State University defeated the Eagles of Ashland
University by a score of 88-74 tonight (Feb. 12).
After the first half of play the Cardinals entered the locker room
with a four-point advantage, 44-40. Junior Avery Stephenson
(Romulus, Mich. / Nebraska-Kearney) led both teams in the half with
14 points, while pulling down four rebounds. Saginaw Valley shot
80% by going 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
Senior Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich. / East Tenn. Univ.) broke
his career high points with a total of 35, breaking his record by
seven. Williams also dished off seven assists and tied the school
record sinking eight shots from beyond the arch. Freshman Greg
Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) finished the night with
a triple double having 14 rebounds, 11 points, and 10 assists.
Foster also had five steals to contribute to his performance.
In the second half Williams dropped in 23 points while Stephenson
contributed nine of his 23 total points and pulled down three
rebounds. Foster charted seven rebounds, six of which were
defensive and had five of his 10 assists.
With the win the Cardinals move to 6-15 overall, and 6-11 in the
GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 10-11 overall and 7-10 in the GLIAC.
Saginaw Valley returns to action Saturday February 14 against
Tiffin at 3:00 p.m. in the James E. O’Neill Arena.
