UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State Football team has turned a corner in 2021, winning its last two contests, including a 31-13 victory over Northwood University in the Axe Bowl on Homecoming last weekend at Wickes Stadium to move to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals have made plays all season on defense, and are tied for the national lead in total takeaways with 22 through seven games. The team is also 17th in the nation in total sacks with 24 after getting to the Northwood quarterback five times in last week's win.

Victor Abraham has led the Cardinal defensive efforts in recent weeks, including 11 tackles against Northwood last weekend. He finished with 1.5 sacks, two tackles for a loss, and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown, his second score of the season.

Wayne State earned its first win of the season last week, topping Davenport University 16-3 on the road. Myren Harris led the Warriors with 138 yards on 19 carries while finding the end zone for a touchdown.

This weekend's matchup is the second of the season between the Warriors and Cardinals after SVSU topped WSU 41-21 in week four in Detroit.
