WEEK FIVE: Cardinals welcome Lakers for Battle of the Valleys
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team bounced back a pair of tough road losses to ranked teams to top Wayne State University 41-21 in a nonconference matchup last weekend in Detroit. The win moved SVSU to 2-2 overall in 2021.
 
SVSU welcomes No. 8 Grand Valley State for a 2 pm kickoff on Saturday at Wickes Stadium. The Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2020 will be honored at halftime along with a special ceremony. The Battle of the Valleys presentation will also take place at the half. 
 
In the last game for the Cardinals, Tommy Scott, the Meijer Player of the Game, rushed the ball 21 times for 150 yards and three scores against Wayne State, earning his third 100-plus-yard rushing game of the season. Casey Williams was efficient in the receiving game, catching 10 passes for 99 yards as the Cardinals kept the chains moving all game. 
 
Connor Luksic hit a pair of field goals, all five of his extra-point attempts, and averaged 53.5 yards on two punts, both downed inside the 20-yard line, earning 
his third GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor of the season. 
 
After the opening game of the season was canceled for GVSU, the Lakers have rolled to three straight wins to open 2021 and have climbed to No. 8 in the latest AFCA NCAA DII National Rankings. 
 
GVSU cruised to a nonconference win on the road last weekend at Michigan Tech, 44-21. The Lakers jumped out to a 30-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way. Tariq Reid led GVSU with 131 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
