SVSU Falls in Season Finale at GVSU, 24-17

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The SVSU football team hit the road on Saturday (Nov. 14) afternoon for the 2015 season finale at Grand Valley State University. After falling behind early, the Cardinals drew closer at the half and added a fourth quarter touchdown but the scoring wasn't enough as the Lakers posted a 24-17 win at GV's Lubbers Stadium.

The Lakers scored on a Kirk Spencer one-yard run at the 8:02 mark to make the score 7-0. Grand Valley increased that advantage to 14-0 when Bart Williams connected with Jamie Potts on a 33-yard touchdown pass at the 3:52 marker.

Alex Kenrick kicked a 25-yard field goal at the 9:18 point in the second quarter, trimming the Laker lead to 14-3. The Cards would tack-on another score when Matt McKoy picked-off a Williams pass and took it 97 yards to the house to make the score 14-10 after a Kenrick PAT.

That's where the score would stand as time expired for the opening half and the teams headed into the locker room.

GVSU tacked-on another pair of scores, building a 24-10 lead after a 26-yard Joel Schipper field goal and a 15-yard TD pass from Williams to Bart Williams.

The Cards would cut the lead to 24-17 when Jacob LeClair had his first-career touchdown pass when he connected with Marq Johnson on a 32-yard scoring play at the 8:58 mark of the fourth quarter. 

SVSU wasn't able to score again and the Lakers sealed for seven point victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Johnson had seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown, marking his second conecutive game with over 100 yards receiving.
  • LeClair was 14-of-27 passing for 170 yards, a touchdown and interception in relief duty of injured Brad Odeman Jr.
  • Jermaih Johnson led the rushing attack, running 12 times for 53 yards. 
  • Dwight Trammer had a game-high 12 tackles for the Cardinals.
  • McKoy added 10 stops and his big 97-yard interception return for a TD.
  • Jack Jennings had seven stops and Sloan Klaski added seven.
  • Kenrick's field goal was his fourth of the season.

Meijer "Player of the Game"

LeClair was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after posting 170 yards passing with a touchdown on on 14-of-27 passing in his first action in a Cardinal uniform.
