UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team ended their 2010 season today (Nov. 13) with a 28-7 loss against rival #6 Grand Valley State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match-up.
Grand Valley lit the scoreboard first as they found the endzone with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter on a seven yard run by quarterback Kyle McMahon. The Lakers would find paydirt again before the end of the half on a Justin Sherrod run to take a 14-0 lead entering the locker room.
The Cardinals came out strong in the second half as freshman quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) found Meijer "Player of the Game" Andrew Beaver (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Dearborn HS) in the endzone on a 17-yard pass with 12:38 left in the third quarter. Beaver ended the game with 60 yards on five receptions and a touchdown. Grand Valley would extend their lead before the end of the quarter to take a 21-7 lead.
Saginaw Valley would be unable to find the endzone throughout the fourth quarter as the Lakers would add their fourth and final score of the contest, going onto victory, 28-7.
The Cardinals were led overall by sophomore running back Ronnie Lark (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) who ended the game with 115 yards rushing on 17 carries and picked up five yards on two receptions while wide receiver Michael Albrecht (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) posted 102 yards on one punt return and four kickoff returns.
Overall, Saginaw Valley's defense was led by senior line backer Wayne Sanders (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) who ended the game with 14 tackles, 2.5 for a loss of six yards while Ja'Vae Ingraham (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson HS) posted 11 tackles, one for loss and had three pass break-ups. Sophomore line backer Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) ended the afternoon with 10 tackles and had two fumble recoveries for the Cardinals.
With the loss, the Cardinals end their 2010 season with an overall record of 4-7 and a conference record of 4-6 while the Lakers move to 10-1 overall on the season and 9-1 in the GLIAC.
