BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named Saginaw Valley State
University senior linebacker John Jacobs
(Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow) "Defensive Player of the Week"
after leading the Cardinals to their second-straight road win to
start the season, a 21-13 triumph over Wayne State University.
Hillsdale College junior quarterback Troy Weatherhead (Grand
Rapids, Mich./Comstock Park) was named GLIAC Football "Offensive
Player of the Week" for helping the Chargers to a 37-35 home win
over Michigan Technological University. Northwood University junior
placekicker Pat Sijan (Novi, Mich./Novi) was tabbed "Special Teams
Player of the Week" after kicking the Timberwolves to a
come-from-beind win at home over Northern Michigan University,
23-21.
Jacobs was a handful for the Wayne State offense as he led the
Cardinals with 12 tackles in SVSU’s 21-13 win in Detroit on
Saturday. He also recorded a quarterback sack and provided one of
the game’s biggest plays when he intercepted a Zach George
pass at midfield as Wayne State was seeking a potential game-tying
score. Jacobs led the Cardinal defense that held WSU to just 247
yards of total offense, and just 103 yards passing.
Saginaw Valley State, ranked #16 in the AFCA Top-25 Coaches’
Poll, will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) when it travels
to Allendale to play #1 Grand Valley State University at 7:00 PM.
