FINDLAY, Ohio, - The Saginaw Valley State
University football defeated the Findlay Oilers by a score of 17-9
in a GLIAC match-up today (Nov. 1).
Things started off right for the Cardinals as Matt Black (Toronto,
Ont./Northern Secondary School) intercepted the second play of the
game and returned it inside the Findlay 15 yard line. Jeremy Burr
(Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) would finish off the drive for the
Cardinals with a 22 yard field goal. The teams would trade
possessions throughout the first half but Findlay would get two
field goals to take 6-3 halftime lead.
The third quarter played the same way as the first half until Dan
Stiefel (Emmett, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson HS) connected
with Galen Stone (Grand Blanc, Mich./Swartz Creek HS) on a 15 yard
strike to put the Cardinals up 10-7. Stiefel finished the afternoon
16-of-32 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Stone grabbed six passes
for 104 yards and a touchdown. Stiefel would connect on the next
drive with Carl Grimes (Detroit, Mich./Michigan State University)
on a seven yard laser to the right corner to help give the Cardinal
a 17-9 advantage.
The Cardinal defense was led by John Jacobs (Prudenville,
Mich./Midland Dow) who had nine tackles, a sack and an a big
interception in the fourth quarter as Findlay was once again on the
march. Juniors Mike LeVand (Grandville, Mich.) and Brad Bush
(Johannesberg, Mich./Gaylord HS) each chipped in with seven
tackles.
The Cardinals move to 6-3 overall on the season and 6-3 in the
GLIAC, while Findlay falls to 2-8 overall on the season and 1-8 in
the GLIAC. The Cardinal will return to action next Saturday when
they travel to Ferris State for the season finale at noon.
