Cardinals Soar by Tiffin, 33-14

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University kept the momentum of last weekends victory over Northern Michigan going as they soared by Tiffin 33-14

The story of the day was the Cardinals defense that repeatedly gave the offense great field position and opportunities all afternoon. As a team, the Cardinals sacked Tiffin quarterback Matt Root six times and picked him off four times during Saturday’s game. The Cardinals also held the Tiffin rushing attack to -28 yards. The defense was led by John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow) who racked up 12 tackles on the afternoon. Inside linebacker Mike LeVand (Grandville, Mich.) had nine tackles, one sack and an interception to help the Cardinal defense.

The Cardinals managed to get a safety for the second time in as many weeks when Jordan Barely (Menominee, Mich./Menominee HS) tackled the punter in the end zone after the snap two-hopped to him. On the very next series Danny Stiefel (Emmett, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson) connected with Andrew Beaver (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Dearborn) on a 41 yard touchdown strike to move the score to 9-0. After a Carlton Downs (Detroit, Mich./Denby HS) interception and return of 50 yards, Stiefel would hook up with tight end Galen Stone (Swartz Creek, Mich.) on a nine yard pass across the middle to give the Cardinals a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Hayes (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) would break loose on the ground for a 29 yard gain to help set up his own two yard touchdown plunge just moments later to increase the Cardinal lead to 23-0 . Senior kicker Jeremy Burr (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) would add a field goal with just under a minute to go in the half for the 26-0 advantage.

Tiffin tried to give their offense a boost in the third quarter on an attempted fake punt that was sniffed out by junior linebacker Jason Kelly (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) for a two yard loss and a change of position inside the Tiffin 20 yard line. Stiefel would find true freshman Jason Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.) for the Cardinals last score on a nine yard crossing pattern for a touchdown.

Saginaw Valley moves to 4-2 overall, 4-2 in the GLIAC, while Tiffin falls to 1-6 on the season, 1-5 in the GLIAC. SVSU will return to action next weekend (Oct. 18) when they travel to Ashland, Ohio, to take on the Eagles in an important GLIAC showdown.
