BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley
State University football team closed out the 2008 regular season
with a win over GLIAC foe Ferris State University by a score of
26-14.
The SVSU defense got things rolling right away as Brad Bush
(Johannesburg, Mich./Gaylord HS) forced a fumble on the first play
of the game that led to first of a record tying four field goal for
senior Jeremy Burr (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS). Burr connected
on a 37-yard field goal to give the Cardinals an early 3-0 lead. On
the next series, Ferris State quarterback Kyle Parrish would break
loose on a 41-yard run after defensive back Ja’Vae Ingraham
(Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson HS) looked to have completed a sack,
but the ball carrier was never signaled down and alertly continued
running toward the endzone. Senior defensive back Matt Black
(Toronto, Ont./Northern SS) would sneak through the line on a
Bulldog punt attempt for a block that would land in the hands of
Ingraham who would take the ball the final 13-yards for a
touchdown.
Burr would start off the second quarter with his second field goal
of the afternoon, this time a 30-yarder from the left hash. Burr
would add a 26 yard field goal, his third on the afternoon, to give
the Cardinals a 16-14 lead with ten minutes left in the second
quarter. Brandon Emeott (Caro, Mich.) would cap off a six play
drive with a three yard dive into the endzone to put SVSU up 23-14
with just over a minute to go in the first half. Emeott would
finish the day with 113 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown. He
moved over the 1,000 yard mark on the season for the Cardinals and
stands 56 yards out the top ten for all-time best seasons for a
Cardinal running back.
After a wild and crazy first half both defenses would settle down
in the second half, allowing just three combined points. After a
scoreless third quarter, Burr would add his record tying fourth
field goal at start of the fourth, when he booted a 34 yarder to
put the Cardinals up by a final score of 26-14. John Jacobs
(Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow) led the defense with 13 tackles,
two fumble recoveries and a half of sack. Bryan Klobucar
(Hudsonville, Mich.) was a force on the defensive line all
afternoon racking up eight tackles, and a sack.
Saginaw Valley moves to 7-3 on the season, 7-3 in the GLIAC while
Ferris State falls to 6-5 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC. SVSU will now
wait and see the results from other action around the region to see
if they can sneak into the sixth and final spot in the Super
Regional #3, as it stands now the Cardinals sit in the tenth spot.
