Cardinal Football Players Help Get Students Off Burning Bus

ALBEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – On a day when a couple of Saginaw Valley State University football players were reading to Albee Township Elementary School students today (Oct. 17), the football players became heroes as they helped remove children from a burning bus.

Redshirt Freshman Jordan Block (Alma, Mich./Alma HS) and sophomore Nick Winkler (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford HS) assisted in getting the children to safety when they noticed the smoking bus.

According to various news sources, witnesses at the scene said the fire appeared to have started near the engine compartment shortly before 10 a.m. today. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Head Football Coach Jim Collins said this shows the character traits he looks for in his football players.

“This shows the type of quality of character of our players,” Collins said as his Cardinal team prepares for a showdown with Ashland University tomorrow (Oct. 18) in Ashland, Ohio. Block, and Winkler did not travel with the team this weekend.
