UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley
State University football team fell to #2-ranked Grand Valley State
University today (Sept. 13) by a score of 36-0.
The Cardinal offense was unable to get anything going during the
rain filled afternoon at Wickes Stadium. Quarterback Dan Stiefel
(Emmett, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson) was unable to get in a
grove the whole day as he felt pressure from the GVSU defensive
line all afternoon. He finished the game 13-of-25 for 63 yards. His
main target on the afternoon was sophomore wide receiver Mike Meade
(Elkhart, Ind./Concord) who hauled in six passes for 36 yards. The
offensive bright spot for the Cardinal might have been when running
back L.J. Robertson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Eastern Michigan) who
came in and picked up 24 yards rushing on the Cardinals final
drive. Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) took over at the
quarterback spot during that final drive and completed 4-of-5
passes for 34 yards and also scrambled for another 14 yards as
well.
The Defense was lead by John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich./Midland
Dow) who had 16 tackles and Carlton Downs (Detroit, Mich./Denby HS)
who had eight tackles and a forced fumble.
The Cardinals will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 20) when
the travel to Northwood University to take on the Timberwolves in
the annual Axe Bowl. Kick off is scheduled for noon.
