12 Cardinals Named to All-GLIAC Football Teams for 2008

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University had 12 members of its football team selected to All-GLIAC teams for their play on the field during the 2008 season. The Cardinals finished the season 7-3 overall and 7-3 in the GLIAC and in a tie for third place in the conference.

Three Cardinals were selected to the 2008 All-GLIAC First Team. Senior OL Desi Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) was named to the all-offense first team. Mayner anchored an offensive line that allowed a GLIAC low 10 sacks and the schools first 1,000 yard rusher since the 2005 season.

Junior linebacker John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow) was named to the all-defense first team. Jacobs led the nation in tackles this season with 13.1 per contest and also intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and had one sack. He posted double digit tackles in eight of the team’s 10 games this season, moving him into 12th on the career tackles list with 273.

Also selected first team all-defense was senior defensive back Matt Black (Toronto, Ont./Northern SS). Black, whom was also recently selected GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, ranked third in the GLIAC with five interceptions. Earlier this season he returned an interception 19 yards for a touchdown against Northern Michigan.

Saginaw Valley also had three players selected to the All-GLIAC Second Team. Senior running back Brandon Emeott (Caro, Mich.), junior tight end Galen Stone (Swartz Creek, Mich.) and senior defensive lineman Brad Bush (Johannesberg, Mich./Gaylord HS). Emeott became the first Cardinals running back since 2005 to eclipse the 1,000 yard plateau. He also had 12 touchdowns on the season and three games of 150 rushing yards or more setting a career high against Michigan Tech with 203. Stone led all Cardinal receivers this season with 47 catches, 631 yards and eight touchdowns. He hauled in a season high 10 catches for 125 yards in the opener against Wayne State. Stone also caught a touchdown pass in seven of the Cardinals 10 games this season.
