Wise strikes-out nine in 3-2 victory at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The SVSU Baseball team continued its spring schedule on the road, facing Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday (Feb. 28) afternoon. The Cardinals used a three-run sixth inning to complete their scoring and were able to close-out for a 3-2 victory over the Trojans.

TNU took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the 4th inning, taking advantage of two SV errors for an unearned run. 

The top of the 6th frame saw the Cards score three runs with two outs to take the 3-1 edge. Mitch Morley had an RBI single that plated Collin Winters and Austin Koin drove in Morley and Joshua Riggs with a single of his own. 

The Trojans added a run in the home half of the 7th inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, pushing one across on a sacrifice fly. 

Saginaw Valley was able to keep Trevecca in check from there, closing-out for the single run victory and move to 5-1 overall on the young season.  

Inside the Boxscore

  • SVSU had six hits, all coming on singles from six different players.
  • Koin had two RBI and Morley had the other for the visitors. 
  • Brandon Scheurer, Riggs, Winters and Hunter Merillat had the other base hits for the Cards. 

On the Mound

  • Brandon Wise (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in his third start. He set down a season-high nine batters, allowing two runs (1 ER) on five hits. He walked zero batters in his 6.2 innings of work. 
  • Ryan Steinhauer had his second save of the season, allowing a hit and walk with three strikeouts in his 2.0 innings to close-out the victory.
