ASHLAND, Ohio -- The SVSU Baseball team dropped a pair of single run games at Ashland University on Saturday (Apr. 7) in GLIAC action. The Cardinals fell in the first game by a 6-5 score before dropping the second contest by a 5-4 margin in nine innings.

Game 1

Ashland took an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the 1st inning and extended the advantage to 6-0 in the 3rd frame with another trio of runs.

The Cardinals trimmed the lead to 6-2 in the top of the 5th, as Todd Paperd had an RBI that plated Quincy Jones and Craig Wilson scored on an error by the defense.

Three more would come SVSU's way in the top of the 6th to make the score 6-5 in Ashland's favor. Jordan Swiss ripped a two-RBI single that scored Derrek Clyde and Collin Winters who both singled for the first two runs. Swiss would then score on a Craig Wilson RBI for the 5th run.

Ashland would get the Cards in order in the 7th to seal the victory.

Jones went 2-3 in the opener with a run scored. Swiss was 1-3 with two RBI while Wilson had a hit and RBI. Paperd had the other Cardinal RBI and walked as well.

Alex Millhisler took the loss on the hill, working 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits with three walks and strikeouts. Brian Feinauer pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Cards.

Game 2

The nightcap saw the Cardinals take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a Jones RBI single that plated Adam Fitzgibbon for the 1-0 edge.

Ashland responded with a pair in the home half of the inning, making the score 2-1.

Derrek Clyde led-off the top of the 3rd with a solo home run, knotting the score at 2-2 with his second long ball of the year.

The Eagles added another pair of runs in the 4th inning, taking the lead with the score at 4-2.

In the top of the 5th Winters would respond for the visitors, knocking a two-run shot to left field to score Clyde and make the score 4-4.

The Cardinals could not capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the 7th and the game went to extra-innings.

After a lead-off walk, sac bunt and another walk to load the bases, the Eagles would score the winning run on a wild pitch and end the game with the 5-4 final count in the ninth inning.

Winters was 3-5 in the second tilt with the home run, triple and two RBI. Clyde had the solo home run as well while Jones had the other RBI.
