UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team continued league play on Wednesday (Apr. 19) afternoon at home against Northwood University. The Cardinals finished-off a 12-1 victory in the first game, which was postponed to be played Wednesday from a week ago. SVSU then fell in the regularly-scheduled GLIAC twinbill, falling by scores of 7-2 and 7-1.

Game Two

Leading 7-0 and starting on offense when the game resumed in the bottom of the 3rd inning, The Cards added three more in the bottom of the 4th to lead 10-1 after Adam Turner belted a three-run home run deep over the center field fence to score Adam Fitzgibbon and Brendan Harrison. The home squad added a run in the 5th when Gerrit Eding scored on a wild pitch. The bottom of the 6th would see Turner knock his second straight long ball, clearing the left field fence to make the score 12-1. That's where it would remain, with SVSU claiming the win.

Inside the Boxscore

• Turner finished 2-3 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBI.
• Swiss went 2-4 with a run and two RBI. One of hits was a double. 
• Cole Brooks was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.
• Mason Schwellenbach finished 2-3 with a run and RBI as well.

On the Mound

• Brandon Wise (2-1) notched the complete game, as he was the original starter last Wednesday. He worked all 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits with a single run and one walk. He struck-out seven batters in the win.

Game Three

The Timberwolves scored the game's first run with a solo home run that carried the left field fence. NU then stranded a runner at third base, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 2nd inning. 

SVSU did not score in the bottom frame and trailed by one heading to the 3rd. The defcit then grew to 4-0 after the Cardinals allowed Northwood to plate three runs in the top half of the frame. 

The Cardinals put runners on base in each of the first five innings and advanced them into scoring position each time but did not score. The offense would break through in the sixth inning, as SVSU halved the deficit to 4-2. Saginaw Valley's first run came with the bases loaded RBI groundout to first from Jason Clark, allowing Harrison to score from third base.

Schwellenbach then brought home Turner with an RBI single to put runners on the corners and two outs. SVSU would leave the runners stranded and went into the 7th inning down by two. 

A walk and a single from Northwood put two runners on in the seventh inning leading by two. NU would homer on the next at-bat to go ahead 7-2 on SVSU. The long ball forced SVSU starter Scott Sency out of the game.

A lead-off single from Collin Winters was left stranded as the Cardinals were retired in order in the 7th, closing out Game 1 with a 7-2 loss against the Timberwolves. 

Inside the Boxscore

• Collin Winters led the SVSU offense with two singles and a double. 
• Schwellenbach also picked up a pair of hits for the Cardinals and drove in the second run of the game with his single in the sixth. 
• Turner and Swiss reached base safely with singles. Turner scored a run as well. 

On the Mound

• Sency (2-5) got the start for SVSU. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. 
• Tristan Faunce rounded out the pitching for the Cardinals, going 0.2 innings in relief. He struck out one and allowed a base hit.

Game Four

Northwood started the nightcap of the doubleheader where they left off in Game 1. The Timberwolves quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Cardinals and held the advantage into the second inning. 

After a scorless second from both teams, SVSU would keep NU off the board in the top of the 3rd. The Cardinals got things going offensively in the bottom half with a two-out single from Adam Fitzgibbon. He advanced to third base on the next at-bat with Collin Winters reaching base safely and giving SVSU runners on the corners. 

SVSU scored a run after Fitzgibbon crossed the plate on a successful double steal. The stolen base cut the deficit to 2-1 and also ended the inning, as Winters was called out on the play attempting to steal second after the run had crossed. 

The Timberwolves nearly regained the two-run edge on SVSU in the top of the 4th inning after leaving two runners stranded on the basepaths. The Cardinals would also leave a pair on base in the fourth and both teams did not allow a run as the game pushed along to the start of the 6th inning. 

In the sixth inning, Northwood got a run back wtih a double to right field. The RBI extra base hit put NU ahead 3-1 over SVSU.

The score remained in favor of Northwood heading into the ninth inning of the doubleheader. The first man would reach base for NU and advance to third, setting up the visitors for a four-run rally that pushed SVSU's deficit to six. 

The Cardinals were retired in order to close out the ninth inning, dropping the nightcap by a final score of 7-1.

Inside the Boxscore

• Cole Brooks recorded one of SVSU's three hits in the contest, roping in a double to right center in the 4th. 
• Fitzgibbon finished the nightcap with a 1-for-3 showing at the plate. He scored the Cardinals lone run and also drew a walk. 
• Winters was 1-for-4 at the plate in Game 2.

On the Mound

• Alex Millhisler (1-3) started Game 2 for the Cardinals. He worked 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out five batters with no walks. 
• Tyler Stambaugh pitched in relief for SVSU, going 3.0 innings and fanning two batters. He allowed one run on four base hits. 
• Jason Clark took to the hill for Stambaugh, pitching 2.0 innings in relief and allowing four runs on four hits.

SVSU hosts Wayne State at the SVSU Baseball Complex for a four-game series on Saturday (Apr. 22) and Sunday (Apr. 23). Saturday's league doubleheader will get going at 1:00 p.m., while Sunday's first pitch is set for Noon.
