Cardinal offense leads to 11-1 victory at Shorter

Augusta, Ga. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team finished off a brief two-game series on Wednesday afternoon with Shorter University. After dropping a 6-1 decision on Tuesday night, the Cardinals scored a season-high 11 runs en route to an 11-1 victory over the Hawks.  

Saginaw Valley began scoring in the top of the first inning once again in the contest as Adam Turner singled home Chad Carson to give the Cardinals a familiar 1-0 lead. After holding Shorter scoreless in the bottom half of the frame, SVSU then tacked on two more runs in the second inning.

With runners at second and third and only one out, Jordan Swiss stepped to the plate and drove home Conner Sonnier and Garrett Soule on an RBI single. His base hit gave the Cardinals a three-run advantage over Shorter.

The Cardinals doubled up on its three-run lead in the top of the third thanks to timely hitting. Craig Wilson plated two rusn for SVSU with his RBI triple and then would cross home after Collin Winters infield hit was turned into an error. The run would stand and the Cardinals were now ahead 6-0 on Shorter. The Hawks would only counter with a lone run in the bottom half. 

SVSU then picked up the run scoring once again in the sixth inning already holding a 6-1 edge on the Hawks. Swiss would plate Soule on his second hit of the contest with an RBI single. He would advance to second base on the next at-bat as Jason Clark would drive in a run with his base hit. The Cardinals tacked on two more runs to close the frame with a four-run sixth inning and a commanding 10-1 lead on Shorter. 

In the top of the seventh, Swiss continued his solid performance at the plate with an RBI double that scored Sonnier. He would head to third on a throwing error and would not cross home for the Cardinals. 

Brendan Harrison would hold Shorter scoreless during his final two innings of relief and powered the Cardinals to the 11-1 victory, thus taking a series split with the Hawks. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Chad Carson led the SVSU offensive attack with a four-hit game. He finished the contest with two doubles, an RBI and crossed home twice. 
  • Jordan Swiss also had a solid performance in the victory for the Cardinals. He went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and drove in four runs as well. 
  • Conner Sonnier scored three runs for the Cardinals and went 1-for-4 at the plate. 
  • Garrett Soule also scored multiple runs for SVSU as well, crossing home twice and adding a base hit to his stat line. 
  • Brandon Wise (1-1) got the start on the mound for SVSU and was credited with the win. He went five innings and only allowed one run on seven total base hits. He would walk just one batter and had two strikeouts. 

Up Next...

SVSU will not play on Thursday. The team will then travel to Owensboro, Ky. to begin a four-game series with Kentucky Wesleyan College beginning on Friday (Mar. 10). First pitch for Game 1 in Friday's doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. while Game 2 will commence at roughly 4:00 p.m.
