COLUMBUS, Ga. - The SVSU baseball team continued on its 2016 spring trip down the east coast states, playing another doubleheader at nationally 13th-ranked Columbus State University on Sunday (Mar. 6). The Cardinals were not able to pull out a victory, however, as the Cougars completed a weekend sweep of SV in defeating them twice in the final two games by identical scores of 7-4.
In the opener, SV had five different players record a hit, with Jordan Swiss belting a two-RBI double and scoring a run. Garrett Soule and Dylin Eschenburg each had one hit too, with Soule knocking-in Eschenburg on a first inning bunt single and Eschenburg getting his RBI on a fifth inning sacrifice fly that plated Swiss. Swiss's double came in the fifth as well, scoring Adam Fitzgibbon and Craig Wilson. Fitzgibbon and Wilson reached on base hits earlier in the frame.
CSU tied the game at 1-1 after one inning and went for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, making the four runs for the Cards in the game not enough.
The second game saw the Cardinals manage just four hits, as Swiss, Carson Eby, Richard Guglielmi and Brendan Harrison all had base-knocks in the contest. Guglielmi and Harrison each posted a double while Eby and Eschenburg had the only two RBIs for SVSU in the game.
Another six-run fourth inning got SVSU behind again and the visitors trailed by a 6-2 count after the fourth. Two runs for Saginaw Valley in the top half of the seventh wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
On the Mound
-Scott Sency (1-1) pitched the first four innings of the opening game. He allowed seven runs on seven hits. Sency walked three and struck out five.
-Justin Steele followed with two relief innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out one.
-Brian Feinauer (1-1) started in game two, tossing the first three innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked five.
-Max Ludka pitched two relief innings, giving up two hits and as many runs, allowing one walk and notching one strike out.
-Andrew Tidwell pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth for SVSU in the nightcap.
Up Next
The Cardinals will travel to Due West, South Carolina for a pair of single, nine-inning conetsts against Erskine. The teams will face-off at 3:00 pm on both Tuesday (Mar. 8) and Wednesday (Mar. 9).
