ALLENDALE – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team squared-off against the #18 Grand Valley State University Lakers in another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on Sunday (Mar. 29).  After the two teams posted a split on Saturday, the Lakers posted an 11-1 win on Sunday.  The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Lakers opened the game's scoring and got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning, going for three runs, aided by a pair of fielding errors by the Cardinals for the 3-0 lead.

SVSU threatened in the top of the 4th, as Richard Guglielmi and Brendan Harrison reached via a hit by pitch and single, respectively.  A Dylan Schultz sacrifice bunt moved them each up a base and the Cards had runners on second and third with one out.  The Lakers got a lineout and groundout, though, and escaped with no runs allowed in the inning.

GVSU added a run in the 3rd and three more in its half of the 4th to extend the lead out to 7-0.

The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the 5th, as a Luke Valutis RBI single scored Chris Perkovich, who reached on a hit by pitch and was moved to second on a groundout.  That made the score 7-1.

The Lakers scored four more in the bottom half of the 5th inning, bumping the lead up to 11-1.

That was it for the scoring, as GVSU finished-off the 10-run victory.

The Cardinals were held to just three hits in the contest, as Valutis, Harrison and Dylin Eschenburg all had a hit.  Valutis had the only RBI for the visitors.

Mitchell Lumley (1-2) took the loss, working 4.0 innings while allowing seven runs.

Saginaw Valley falls to 7-8 overall for the 2015 season and 2-5 in the GLIAC.  GVSU improves to 12-8 and 4-3 in league play.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to the weather until Tuesday (Mar. 31) at 3:00 pm in Allendale.  Stay tuned to www.svsucardinals.com for any and all updates regarding schedule changes this spring.
