TIFFIN, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team continued Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Sunday with another doubleheader on the road against Tiffin University.  The Cardinals fell in the first game by a narrow 4-3 score in the opener before dropping an 11-0 decision in the nine-inning nightcap to the Dragons.

Game One

Tiffin got on the board first in the day's first game.  The Dragons plated four runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, using three hits and a Cardinal error to take the 4-0 advantage.

SVSU threatened the next half, loading the bases with two outs in the top of the 3rd.  The Dragons were able to get a strikeout, however, to end the threat and carry the four-run lead into the bottom of the inning.

Brendan Harrison got the Cards on the board in the top of the 6th.  The sophomore transfer hit his first-career homerun to score Chad Carson, who led the inning off with a double.  The two-run blast cut the deficit to 4-2.

That same 4-2 score held true heading into the top of the 7thDemetrius Dunlap drew a one-out walk and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and passed ball, respectively.  After a groundout, Connor Foley dug-in and knocked an RBI single to score Dunlap, making the score 4-3.

Tiffin then made a pitching change with two outs, as Wyatt Myers came on in relief of starter Luke Fraley.  Myers would pick-off Foley at first base, ending the contest and earning the save without throwing a pitch.

Harrison had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBIs.  Foley added the RBI single for SVSU as well while Carson and Brad Schalk each had a double.

Michael Ellenbest (1-2) took the loss on the mound, working six innings while allowing six hits, four runs and striking-out four batters.

Game Two

The Dragons got out front first in the nightcap as well, using three hits and three walks to go for six runs and lead by a 6-0 count after the 1st inning.

Tiffin added a pair of runs in its half of the 2nd inning and another in the bottom of the 3rd to extend the lead out to 9-0 after three full.  Single runs in the bottom of the 5th and 8th innings would make the score 11-0 in the home team's favor.

That's where the score would stand, as the Cardinals weren't able to get on the board in the contest and the Dragons completed the shutout.

Luke Valutis led the offensive effort, going for two doubles of the five hits for SV.  Carson, Kyle Kaufmann and Dylin Eschenburg had the other three hits.

Mitchell Lumley (1-1) took the loss as the starting pitcher in the nightcap, allowing eight runs in just over an inning pitched.

Saginaw Valley falls to an even 6-6 overall and 1-3 in the GLIAC for the 2015 season after the losses.  The Cardinals return to the field next with another road GLIAC weekend series, this one at Grand Valley State University.  Game times for the doubleheaders are set for Saturday (Mar. 28) at 1:00 pm and Sunday (Mar. 29) at noon against the Lakers in Allendale, Michigan.
