Unearned Runs Cost Cardinals in Series Finale, 3-2

Unearned Runs Cost Cardinals in Series Finale, 3-2

CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team fell at Malone University today (April 14) by a final score of 3-2.

Saginaw Valley was the home team on the scoreboard because the location was moved to Malone. The series was scheduled to be at home but moved due to weather and field conditions at SVSU.

The Cardinals (10-15, 8-7 GLIAC) jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning scoring an unearned run after an error by the Malone left fielder. Chris Perkovich (Canton, Mich.) scored on the play for the early 1-0 edge.

Malone (13-19, 6-13 GLIAC) answered right back in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead after a Cardinal error resulted in two unearned runs.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the eighth when Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) laced a two-out RBI double down the left field line. Brad Schalk (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Bishop Foley) scored on the play to bring the Cardinals within one, 3-2.

SVSU was unable to manufacture any momentum in the bottom of the ninth as they went down in order and fell to the Pioneers by a 3-2 tally.

Starting pitcher Mike Schaaf (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) pitched well going five innings allowing seven hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.

Aaron Woods (Menominee, Mich.) and Dylan Wisniewski (Southgate, Mich. / Riverview Community) each came in to pitch a pair of scoreless innings as they kept the Malone offense at bay.

Brad Schalk and Chet LaFave led the SVSU offense with two hits apiece. The nine inning contest took less than two hours to complete. Each team pounded out seven hits total.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action this Wednesday (April 17) at Grand Valley State University.
