Baseball Announces Postseason Awards

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team announced its postseason awards today (5/25).

Sophomore outfielder Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) was selected as the "Most Valuable Player".  O'Boyle posted a .335 batting average in 2011, leading the team in hits (52), doubles (16), triples (3), home runs (6), RBIs (46), total bases (92) and slugging percentage (.594).  He was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Second Team for his efforts.

The "Top Pitcher" award went to sophomore Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich.), who finished the season with a 6-4 record in 10 starts.  Beauchaine had a team-best 2.21 era while tossing 61.0 innings, striking-out 48 batters and holding opponents to a team-best .238 batting average  He was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team as a starting pitcher.

The 2011 "Most Improved Player" was junior Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS).  Woock hit .302 this year in 34 starts.  He had 10 doubles, a pair of triples, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Senior outfielder Mitch Vrooman (Comstock, Mich./Kellogg CC) was tabbed as the "Top Defensive Player".  Vrooman posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage to finish his career in a Cardinal uniform.

The "Brian Miller Award", which is handed out to the athlete with the highest team GPA, went to senior pitcher Craig Engerer (Freeland, Mich.).  Engerer finished his SVSU career with a season that saw him go 1-0 in 13 appearances on the mound. 

The "Coaches' Award" goes to freshman pitcher Derek Kilmer (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice HS) this year.  Kilmer had 14 very effective relief appearances in 2011.

The Cardinals advanced to the GLIAC Baseball Tournament for the second-straight season in 2011, finishing the year with a 25-24 overall record.
