Cardinals Defeat Rochester College, 9-4

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team defeated Rochester College today (May 9) by a score of 9-4 to close out its regular season.

The Cardinals scored first in the game, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning after Cam Wiechmann (Birch Run, Mich./Muskegon CC) drove-in Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University).  Eric Hummel (Menominee, Mich./Minnesota-Duluth) would then score Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) on a fielder's choice.

Rochester responded with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, grabbing the 4-2 lead.

SVSU bounced right back in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to knot the game at 4-4.  Ermers led-off the inning with a double and Wiechmann would notch his second RBI of the contest after lacing a single down the left field line to score Ermers.  A double by Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich./Olney Central College) two batters later would score Wiechmann to force the tie.

The Cardinals plated two more runs in the bottom of six, as Wiechmann posted another pair of RBI's, knocking-in Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich.) and Trent Brisboe (Hastings, Mich.) on a single to make the score 6-4.

SVSU posted another two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Mayner flied out to left field, hitting in LaFave and advanced Hummel to third.  Hummel would score on a Trent Brisboe (Hastings, Mich./Hastings HS) single through the left side to give the Cardinals an 8-4 lead.

Saginaw Valley would add its final run in the eighth inning, as Jason Kandal (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling Central HS) had a sacrifice fly, scoring Burt.  The Cardinals would hold their lead through the ninth inning, going onto the 9-4 victory.

Ermers led the way offensively for the Cardinals, posting two runs off three hits while Weichmann also posted three hits and knocked-in four runners.  Matt Jacobson (North Branch, Mich./Jackson CC) picked up the win on the mound for Saginaw Valley, throwing two innings in relief.

Saginaw Valley ends their regular season with an overall record of 24-22 and finished 18-15 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference while Rochester falls to 20-17 on the season.  The Cardinals will return to action this Thursday (May 12) as they travel to take on Grand Valley State University at 3:00 pm in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio.
