UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team swept the visiting Tiffin University Dragons today (5/8) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader to complete a weekend sweep.

With the wins, the Cardinals improve to 23-22 overall and 18-15 in the GLIAC and secure the #4 seed in the 2011 GLIAC Baseball Tournament, which begins Thursday.  SVSU will open-up against #1 Grand Valley State University.  The Dragons fall to 13-35 overall and 10-24 in league play.

In the opener, Tiffin led 3-0 after the top of the fourth inning.  SVSU notched a run in its half of the inning, as Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) drove-in Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.

That's where the score would remain until the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Cardinals were the benefactors of four Tiffin errors, and scored three runs in the frame to come-away with the 4-3 victory.  O'Boyle had the game-winning RBI via a walk with the bases loaded, as Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) scored from third.

Andrew Tidwell (Canton, Mich.) upped his record to 3-1 on the season after working 2.0 innings of scoreless relief in the contest to record the victory.

Hunt and Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) were both 2-for-4 in the game, with Hunt posting an RBI.

Game two saw the Cardinals respond with two runs in the first after the Dragons plated one run in the top of the frame, using an O'Boyle triple to score Woock and a single by Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) that plated O'Boyle.

SVSU held a 5-2 lead after four innings, using an RBI double by Hunt and a two-RBI single by Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS).

Tiffin scored a single run in the top of the fifth, but that's all the Dragons could muster, as SVSU closed-out for the 5-3 victory.

Mike Sprinkles (Carleton, Mich./Jackson CC) earned the victory on the mound, working five innings and picking-up his first victory of the season.

Ermers was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI's while both O'Boyle and Cam Wiechmann (Birch Run, Mich.) added two hits apiece.

SVSU is back in action at home on Monday (5/9) in a single, nine-inning contest against Rochester College.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in University Center.
