COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team fell to Ohio Dominican University today (4/23) 8-6 in game one of a scheduled doubleheader, however the second game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather with SVSU leading 5-3 after three innings.
The Cardinals posted their first two runs in the first inning as sophomore Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) drew a walk and scored on a Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) triple. Junior Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) then stepped into the batter's box and laid down a squeeze bunt to score Woock.
The Panthers posted six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the 6-2 advantage.
Saginaw Valley began to battle back in the top of the third as they added two more runs to on a Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) lead-off triple to right center field. Ermers would draw a walk to put two runners on base for junior Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich./Clio HS), who would hit them both in on a double to right center field.
Ohio Dominican responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 8-4. The Cardinals would add a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to take the lead, as they fell 8-6.
Freshman Aaron Woods (Menominee, Mich./Minnesota-Duluth) took the loss on the mound for Saginaw Valley. VanAlst led the way for the Cardinals with a team-high two hits and posted two RBI's, while Woock would add two RBI's as well.
With the loss, Saginaw Valley's overall record falls to 15-20 on the season and 10-13 in the GLIAC while the Panthers move to 14-22 on the season and 11-14 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action next week (4/27), as they travel to Midland, Mich. to take on the Timberwolves of Northwood University at Dow Diamond. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm.
