UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team posted a key Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) sweep of visiting Wayne State University today (4/13) in a mid-week doubleheader.  The Cardinals claimed the first game by a 2-0 score before enduring a 10-inning 3-2 victory in the nightcap.  The two victories move Saginaw Valley to 13-15 overall on the season and 8-8 in the GLIAC while the Warriors are now 18-10 and 10-6 in league play.

In the opener, the game remained scoreless until SVSU came to bat in the bottom of the fourth.  Kyle Parks (Flushing, Mich.) roped a two-out single through the right side to score Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) and Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS).

That would be the only scoring SVSU starter Eric Hummel (Menominee, Mich./Minnesota-Duluth) would need, as he tossed gem, allowing only two hits and walking one batter while recording his first complete game shutout in a Cardinal uniform, upping his record to 2-1 on the season.

Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) had two hits in the opener, while Parks had both RBI's.

The second game didn't feature much offense, either.  The Cardinals scored single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, respectively, on a single by Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) and a Warrior wild pitch to hold a 2-0 lead.

Wayne State cut the lead to a single run in the top of the sixth and would knot the game at 2-2 when Michael Wiseman laced a two-out double over the center fielder's head.

Both teams would have their chances in extra innings, and the game would remain tied going into the bottom of the 10th inning.    Mayner singled to lead-off the inning and would be pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Parks.  A Hunt ground-out would move Mayner to third and Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) would finish things off with an infield single, making the final score 3-2.

Mike Saunders (Mt. Morris, Mich./EA Johnson HS) earned the victory to move to 3-3 on the year, pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while striking-out four.

Hunt, Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) and Mayner all had a pair of hits in game number two, with Woock and Schwanz each getting an RBI, Schwanz's being the game-winner.

The Cardinals are back in action this weekend, as they host Ashland University in a weekend GLIAC series.
