LAKELAND, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team traveled to Florida Southern College for an evening contest on Wednesday and fell short by a score of 6-2.  The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-4 overall on the season while the Moccasins improve to 10-5 overall.

The Mocs jumped out to a quick lead in the contest, plating four runs in the bottom half of the first inning off SVSU starter Scott Horman (St. Louis, Mich.).  The Cardinals would respond with a run in the top of the third, as Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) led the inning off with a double and was later knocked-in by a Brandon Schwanz (Novi, Mich./Henry Ford CC) infield single.

Schwanz laced a two-out single to center field to lead-off the top of the fifth.  Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) would follow that up with a single and a fielding error would allow Schwanz to score after he was moved to third on a hit-by-pitch, making the score 4-2.

Florida Southern tacked-on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 6-2.  That is where the score would stand, as the Cardinals were unable to make a late inning comeback.

SVSU managed only six hits in the contest.  Mayner ripped a pair of doubles while Schwanz had a two singles and an RBI.  Hunt and Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) also added singles for the Cardinals.

Horman took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings while striking-out four batters.  Derek Kilmer (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice HS) saw his first collegiate action, as he pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, fanning a pair of Florida Southern hitters.

Saginaw Valley is back in action tomorrow, as it travels to St. Petersburg for a doubleheader against Rockhurst (Mo.).  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium.
