UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team was swept by the visiting #14 Grand Valley State University Lakers Saturday (Apr. 24), losing the first contest 6-0 before dropping the nightcap by a score of 5-1.  The losses drop the Cardinals to 17-19 overall on the season and 13-13 in the GLIAC, while GVSU improves to 31-11 overall and 21-8 in league play.

Game One

SVSU couldn't get the bats going in the opener, as the Cards could only muster three hits compared to the Lakers' 11.  Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS), Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) all posted singles in the contest.

Scott Haase (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) took the loss on the hill, giving-up three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Game Two

The Lakers would score first, plating a single run in the top of four.  The Cardinals would respond with a run in the bottom half of the frame, as Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) had an RBI single to right field, which scored Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC).  SVSU couldn't put any more runs across the plate, however, and Grand Valley put up a four-spot in the top of six to finish with a 5-1 victory.

Garrett Grundman (Croswell, Mich./Graceland University) was the losing pitcher for SVSU, working 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

O'Boyle had a pair of hits in the nightcap, knocking-in the only Cardinal run of the day, while Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) also posted two base-knocks.  Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had the fifth hit for the Cardinals in the second contest, as SVSU was out-hit 19-8 in the doubleheader.

The two teams are back in action tomorrow for another GLIAC doubleheader, which is slated to begin at noon.  The first game will be a nine-inning contest while the second contest will be a seven-inning affair.
