Baseball Defeats Alma, 12-2

ALMA, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team defeated the Alma College Scots (9-13) by a score of 12-2 on Tuesday, April 13.  The non-conference victory improves the Cardinals' record to 12-15 overall on the season.

The Cardinals got ahead early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.  Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) recorded a two RBI single, scoring Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) and Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC), who both reached base on walks.  A Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) single would then score Thomas from second.

SVSU would add another pair in their half of the second, as Peterson would score on a wild pitch and a Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) sacrifice fly would score Dore for the second run and a 5-0 lead.

Saginaw would score next in the fifth inning.  O'Boyle would score on a Dan Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) groundout for the first run.  An Eric Burt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) double would score Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS), and would be followed by a double by Peterson, which would score Burt as the Cards took an 8-0 advantage.

The Cards would tack-on four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two RBI single by Mitch Vrooman (Comstock, Mich./GRCC), which scored Luke McClain (Mt. Morris, Mich.) and Drew Woock (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS). 

Mike Sprinkles (Carleton, Mich./Jackson CC) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, working eight innings, allowing only three total hits while allowing only two runs.

Peterson led offensively, recording two hits, including a double, two runs, three steals and an RBI.  O'Boyle also had a pair of hits with a double, run scored and an RBI.  Thomas, Woock, McClain, Vrooman, Burt and Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) all added a hit in the contest, with Thomas and Vrooman posting two RBI's.

Saginaw Valley returns to GLIAC action on Wednesday (Apr. 14), as it hosts rival Northwood University in a 2:00 pm doubleheader at University Center, Mich.
