Baseball Drops Pair To Hillsdale In GLIAC Action

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a GLIAC doubleheader to Hillsdale College (5-13, 2-5 GLIAC) on Wednesday by scores of 6-3 and 2-1, respectively.  The Cardinals drop to 8-8 overall on the season and 5-2 in conference play with the two losses.

Game 1

In the opener, the Chargers grabbed 4-0 lead after one inning of play.  The Cardinals would cut the lead in half in the top of the third, as Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) would score their first run on a Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) bases-loaded walk.  Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC) would then score on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS).

Hillsdale would tack-on two more runs in their half of the fourth to take a 6-2 advantage.  SVSU would get its third and final run on Charlie Thomas's (Northville, Mich.) fourth home run of the year in the top of the fifth, but weren't able to plate any runners after that.

Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) went 2-for-4 in the game.  Thomas had one hit, the home run and a single RBI, while Dore, Webber, Hunt and Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) each added singles in the contest, with Webber having one RBI.

Jon Tibaudo (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) took the loss on the hill for the Cards in game one.

Game 2

Hillsdale would get on the board first again, scoring a single run in the bottom of the second inning. The Cardinals would knot the game at one run apiece in their half of the sixth, as a Dore single to left field would score Hunt from second.

Hillsdale responded in the bottom of seven.  The Chargers got a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second.  SVSU intentionally walked the third batter to set-up the double play, but a single up the middle produced the game-winning run and the final score of 2-1.

Carson Beauchaine (Fraser, Mich.) pitched well in the loss, pitching the entire 6 1/3 innings and striking-out four Chargers.

SVSU's offense could only manage four hits in the night-cap, as Dore, Webber, Peterson and Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) all posted singles.  The Cardinals' only extra-base hit of the twinbill was Thomas's solo shot in the first game, as SVSU posted 11 total hits.

Saginaw returns to the diamond this weekend, as it travels to Ashland University for a weekend series Saturday (Mar. 27) and Sunday (Mar. 28).  Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm, while a single, nine-inning game is set to begin at noon on Sunday.
