Saginaw Valley State University Athletics will be releasing a series of student-athlete spotlights, which will feature some of our Cardinal senior student-athletes from the 2019-20 academic year. Stay tuned to www.svsucardinals.com to get to know our SVSU seniors a bit more.

Next up in our series is Women's Swimming & Diving student-athlete Alicia Sobell. Sobell, a native of Portage, Michigan, competed in distance, freestyle, IM, butterfly and backstroke events for the Cardinals over the past four seasons. 

Her favorite memory while competing for Saginaw Valley was mid-season at Cleveland State. One of her favorite road trips at SVSU was the away trip to Northern Michigan, saying that it is a long bus ride but she enjoys traveling and spending that time with teammates. 

Alicia's favorite spot on campus if the Health and Human Services Building. She is a nursing major who is set to graduate in December 2020. Her future plans are to become a registered nurse and care for pediatric patients. She says she may eventually go back to school to become a nurse practitioner.

Some of Sobell's favorite hobbies include watching movies, hanging out with friends and throwing around a frisbee. She enjoys the time she spends with people and making others laugh.

"I'm proud of myself for completing my four years at SVSU on the swim team. It was hard after balancing swim, nursing, school and having a job. I made so many friendships and learned so much about myself during these times."

"Alicia has been a valuable asset to the women's swimming & diving team for the past four years. As a nursing major, she has maintained a strong GPA all the while making a full-time commitment to the program. She proved herself to be a strong leader of the program and was a great role model to the younger members of the team. As an athlete, she was a very versatile swimmer, having competed in a multitude of events over the course of her career. She was a member of the GLIAC Championships scoring squad all four years of her career. Her leadership qualities and work ethic in the classroom and the pool will be missed!"
