Cardinals Host the 'Doug Hanson' Open

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Men's and Women's track and field teams hosted the 'Doug Hanson' Open today (Jan. 14).

The Lady Cardinals were led by junior Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) who earned a first place finish in the pole vault and recorded a height of 3.66meters, breaking the previous school record.  Willford would also earn a first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.69.  Also earning a first place finish was teammate Megan Pittoors (Macomb, Mich./Dakota HS) who recorded a final time of 18:31.47 for the 5,000-meter run.  Freshman Elizabeth Sampson (Willis, Mich./Lincoln HS) recorded a time of 8.22 in the 60-meter dash placing her first overall.  Teammates Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) and Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) placed first and second in the mile coming in with final times of 5:19.91 and 5:20.25, respectively.  Junior Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) would earn a first place finish in the 200-meter dash crossing the line with a time of 27.47, while fellow teammate Lauren Hill placed first in the 3,000-meter run coming in at 10:54.67.  Earning a first place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.61meters was sophomore Sara Jones (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS).  Freshman Lauren Little (Oak Park, Mich./Berkley HS) placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 10.31meters.

On the men's side, senior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) led the way finishing first overall in the 3,000-meter run clocking in at 8:43.06.  Freshmen teammates Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) and Nathan Rusch (Crosswell, Mich./Crosswell Lexington HS) would earn first place finishes, Sanders in the long jump with a distance of 6.31meters, and Rusch in the high jump with a height of 1.88meters.  Another top freshman finish came from Jonathan Roosen (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) who finished first in the shot put with a toss of 14.54 meters.

The Cardinals will be back in action again on Friday (Jan. 21) when they host the SVSU Indoor Classic.
