Cardinals Host the Indoor Holiday Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed today (12/3) in the SVSU Indoor Holiday Classic.

The men competed very well in this home opener and crecorded some very good marks to start the season.  Placing second in the mile was senior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) who crossed the line at 4:22. Also earning second place finishes were teammates Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich./Clio HS), who came in at 2:02.7 for the 800-meter run, and Cortland Seaver (Freeland, Mich./Freeland HS), who timed in at 8:43.7 for the 3,000-meter run. The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS), Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS), Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Artherton HS), and Mike Rossman (Berkley, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) placed second overall and clocked in at 3:30.3. Grob would also place second in the pole vault with a height of 4.26 meters while teammate Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) earned a first place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.96 meters.

One the women's side junior Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) helped lead the women's team placing first in the mile clocking in at 5:20. Earning a second place finishes in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run were teammates Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS), who crossed the line at 1:00.9, and Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS), who timed in at 2:28.4. Coming in with a final time of 10:59.5, good for second, in the 3,000-meter run was junior Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS). Also placing second overall was the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS), Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS), and Lauren Little (Oak Park, Mich./Berkley HS) who crossed the line at 4:08.1. Tying for third place in the high jump was sophomore Sara Jones (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) who cleared a height of 1.58 meters. Tying for second place in the pole vault were teammates Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich./Corunna HS) and Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) who both cleared a height of 3.20 meters, respectively. Finally, senior Kayleen Driscoll (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS) earned a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 9.82 meters.

The Cardinals will be back in action Friday (1/14) when the host the SVSU Doug Hanson Open.
