SVSU Stays Atop GLIAC After 4-0 Win Over Walsh

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Walsh 4-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Sunday (Oct 13).

Saginaw Valley started the scoring in the 18th minute when Mitch Reinhart put a one time shot past the goalkeeper off of a Walsh header that failed to clear the area.

The second Cardinal goal came from fellow defender Taylor Clarke at the 40:34 mark.  The 2-0 score would take the squads in to halftime.

Sophomore forward Tyler Channell continued the SVSU scoring at the 58:30 mark, adding to the lead.  Zach Walega added his first goal of the season to make the score 4-0 in the 89th minute when he dribbled through a group of Cavalier defenders and shot a ball past the outstretched goalkeeper.  The last-minute goal would seal the 4-0 win for the Cardinals.

Freshman goalkeeper Aaron Gerwig notched his GLIAC-leading fourth shutout of the season.  Gerwig is now 8-1-2 overall in 2013.

SVSU improves to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the GLIAC while Walsh falls to 4-7 on the season and 4-5 in the conference.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday (Oct 18) when they return home to play Lake Erie College.  Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
