UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Walsh 4-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Sunday (Oct 13).
Saginaw Valley started the scoring in the 18th minute when Mitch Reinhart put a one time shot past the goalkeeper off of a Walsh header that failed to clear the area.
The second Cardinal goal came from fellow defender Taylor Clarke at the 40:34 mark. The 2-0 score would take the squads in to halftime.
Sophomore forward Tyler Channell continued the SVSU scoring at the 58:30 mark, adding to the lead. Zach Walega added his first goal of the season to make the score 4-0 in the 89th minute when he dribbled through a group of Cavalier defenders and shot a ball past the outstretched goalkeeper. The last-minute goal would seal the 4-0 win for the Cardinals.
Freshman goalkeeper Aaron Gerwig notched his GLIAC-leading fourth shutout of the season. Gerwig is now 8-1-2 overall in 2013.
SVSU improves to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the GLIAC while Walsh falls to 4-7 on the season and 4-5 in the conference.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday (Oct 18) when they return home to play Lake Erie College. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
