Cardinals compete at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University cross country teams closed the month of September on Friday at the Spartans Auto Owners Invitational hosted by Michigan State University on the Forest Akers East Gold Golf Course.

For the women, SVSU registered 236 points to wind up seventh out of 19 teams – including finishing ahead of five NCAA Division I programs. Junior Lauren Buckner paced the team with a 20th-place showing out of 231 competitors, clocking the 6-kilometer course in 22 minutes and 21.13 seconds. Senior Arianna Wegienka was the second Cardinal to cross the finish line in 22:37.20 for 32nd overall.

The host Spartans won the women's team title with 19 points.

On the men's side, SVSU secured ninth place in the 19-team field with 237 points. – besting three D-I opponents. Junior Dayton Brown led the Cardinals way with a 25:28.74 time, which was good for 31st out of 279 competitors.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when SVSU hosts Red October.
