Cardinals withstand Wildcats for 1-0 win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team looked to avenge a loss earlier this season with a rematch against Northern Michigan University on Friday at Braddock Field.

The game was the first this season for the Cardinals on Braddock Field, following the installation of a new artificial turf surface earlier this month.

SVSU fell to the Wildcats 4-1 earlier this season, but the defense stood tall in the rematch. The Cardinals withstood 20 shots from NMU and found the game's only goal in the 64th minute to hold on for a 1-0 win.

The victory moves SVSU to 9-4-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the loss for NMU is just the second of the season for the Wildcats.

After Kennedi Pugh made two saves in the opening 10:50, Lainey Garbarz entered for SVSU to make seven saves the rest of the way in the shutout.

Senior Amy Babon broke through for the Cardinals in the second half with her third goal of the season and second in two games to put the Cardinals in front for good.

NMU held a 20-14 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Cardinals will celebrate Senior Day against Michigan Tech at 1 pm on Sunday at Braddock Field.
