Late surge lifts SVSU to 3-1 win at Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team rallied for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on the road at Davenport University on Sunday.

The Cardinals scored three times in the final 20 minutes, including an own goal from the Panthers to comeback for a 3-1 win. The victory moves SVSU to 8-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the GLIAC.

Davenport got the game's first goal on an unassisted strike from Haley Diekevers in the 43rd minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Cardinals registered 11 shots in the second half, as they looked for the equalizer. SVSU was able to earn a penalty kick in the 71st minute, with Amy Babon converting for the Cardinals to tie the game.

Just over three minutes later, the Cardinals moved in front with an own goal from Davenport. Madie Saleh secured the win late with her first goal of the season in the 85th minute.

SVSU outshot Davenport 15-6 and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Lainey Garbarz made three saves in net for the Cardinals in the win.

SVSU returns home for the final three games of the regular season, starting against Northern Michigan University at 1 pm on Friday at Braddock Field.
