Sixth-Ranked Lakers Best Visiting Cardinals in the Battle of the Valleys, 3-1

ALLENDALE, Mich.  – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team saw its season-long five-game unbeaten streak snapped on the road by nationally No. 6-ranked Grand Valley State University, 3-1, on Friday evening.

The Cardinals drop to 7-4-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Lakers improve to 10-1-3 on the season and 8-0-2 in the GLIAC.

Host Grand Valley got on the scoreboard first in the 26th minute when Kennedy Bearden scored a penalty kick goal. Then 94 seconds later, Taylor Reid made it 2-0 on a shot into the upper-right corner on a feed from Bearden.

Trailing 3-0 in the second half, the Cardinals spoiled the shutout bid when Stephanie Strong found the back of the net with a strike into the upper-left corner. Strong, who leads the team with eight goals, had four of SVSU's eight shots on frame.

GVSU got an insurance goal from Bearden, her second of the contest, in the 52nd minute.

The Cardinals were able to put pressure on the Lakers defense by outshooting GVSU 20-14 and taking nine of the 13 corner kicks.

GVSU keeper Kendall Robertson played the first 80:41 to get the win, making six saves while not allowing a goal.

Saginaw Valley looks to get back on the winning track Sunday at Davenport in a GLIAC clash, with opening kickoff set for noon.
