Cardinals hold off Pride for 2-1 win

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-1 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday in Hammond, Ind.

The Cardinals scored two goals in the first half and held on for the win to improve to 7-3-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Rileigh Garbarz got the scoring started for the Cardinals with her fourth of the season on an assist from Maddie Saleh in the 23rd minute. Jensen Taylor netted her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute to double the SVSU advantage. Sophia Zalucki recorded the assist on Taylor's goal.

The Pride got on the board just before halftime with a goal from Lauryn Tillmon to cut the SVSU lead to 2-1.

The teams played a scoreless second half and the Cardinals held on for the win. Lainey Garbarz got the win in net with one save. SVSU outshot PNW 14-4 and each team took six corner kicks.

The Cardinals travel to Grand Valley State University for a GLIAC matchup at 7 pm on Friday in Allendale, Mich.
