Four second-half goals lead SVSU to 4-2 win over Parkside

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team erupted for four goals in the second half after trailing 1-0 to double up visiting Wisconsin-Parkside, 4-2, on Friday at the SVSU Intramural Soccer Field.

The host Cardinals improve to 4-3-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Rangers dip to 4-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • Emily Mikkelson fed Jamie Mohs for her first goal of the season to give Parkside the early lead in the seventh minute.
  • The Cardinals pressured the Rangers' goal in the first half, outshooting them 7-6 with Mia Guyton forced to make six saves to preserve a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
  • But it all changed in the second half for SVSU, which found the back of the net with four tallies in a span of 13 minutes and 16 seconds.
  • Stephanie Strong got Saginaw Valley on the scoreboard in the 70th minute when Kaley Douglass set her up for her third goal of the season.
  • Then in the 73rd minute, Rileigh Garbarz put SVSU ahead for the first time on the afternoon, 2-1, on a pass from Sophia Zalucki.
  • After Parkside tied it 2-2 on Bjork Bjarmadottir's first goal of 2022 in the 80th minute, Zalucki notched her first career marker 51 seconds later to put the Cardinals in front for good, 3-2.
  • SVSU got insurance in the 83rd minute when Madi Bajis scored her second goal of the fall on an assist from Amy Babon.
