SVSU takes GLIAC opener 2-1 over Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team opened the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a home matchup against Davenport University on Friday at the SVSU IM Field.

The Cardinals scored twice in the final minutes of the opening half to take a 2-0 lead. The Panthers found the net late in the game, but SVSU held on for the 2-1 win to move to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • As they have numerous times this season, SVSU controlled the pace of play throughout the game, including outshooting Davenport 12-4 in the first half.
  • The Cardinals finally broke through with her first goal of the season from Riliegh Garbarz in the 42md minute on an assist from Jensen Taylor.
  • SVSU doubled its lead after Stephanie Strong netted her first of the year in the 44th minute to give SVSU the 2-0 lead at the half. Taylor picked up her second assist of the game on the Strong goal.
  • The score remained 2-0 in favor of SVSU until Ainsley Oliver scored for the Panthers in the 78th to cut the Davenport deficit in half.
  • The Cardinals held on the rest of the way to earn the win.
  • SVSU outshot Davenport 19-6 overall and led in corner kicks 5-3.
  • Kennedi Pugh (1-1-1) earned her first victory with one save in net for SVSU.
