Track and Field Wraps Up Conference Competition in Calendonia

CALENDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Track and Field Teams Wrapped up their final day of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Davenport University on Friday, May 5. The two teams competed over the last three days for a shot at the GLIAC Crown. The men's team finished in third overall in a tight battle for second place with Davenport University and the women's team leapfrogged Wayne State to overtake the second-place position on the final day.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights from the meet included multiple conference champions from both the men's and women's teams. Additionally, there were multiple school records broken where Andrew Quinn etched his name in the Cardinal record books in the shotput with a throw of 18.54m (60' 10") and Cheyenne Williamson added to her long list of standing records for the Lady Cards. Williamson posted new records in the high jump with a leap of 1.80m (5' 10.75") and in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.45 seconds.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

MEN'S

  • Thomas Hufton III was the only individual athlete for the men's team to find the top of the podium during the meet, clocking 30:45.24 in the 10,000m race. Hufton plans to race in the 10k at the NCAA finals.
  • The 4x400 relay team that consisted of Ryan Brenner, Kabanu Witherspoon, Brendan Nesbitt, and Tyler Burrell took the crown clocking 3:18.23 edging out the team from Michigan Tech by .71 seconds.

WOMEN'S

  • Cheyenne Williamson was the only individual athlete for the women's team atop the podium this afternoon. However, she did it three times, in three different events. Williamson won the High Jump (1.80m; 5' 10.75"), the 100m hurdles (13.45 seconds), and the 200m dash (24.06 seconds). All of the marks met NCAA Division II Provisional Standards.

 

OTHER PODIUM PERFORMANCES

MEN'S

  • Tyler Burrell placed runner-up in the 400m dash with a time of 49.11. Burrell recently set his best time in the 400 yesterday during the preliminary race.
  • Nathan Furst placed third in the 110 hurdle finals and also notched an NCAA Division II Provisional Mark in the event. Furst finished his race in 14.42 seconds.
  • Andrew Quinn notched a new school record on his way to a second place finish in the shot put with a toss of 18.54m (60' 10") where he found himself also hitting the NCAA Provisional Mark for Division II with the toss as well.
  • Nolan Berg took the final spot on the podium in the Discus throw on his final attempt which flew 46.47m (152' 5"). Berg picked up six points in the finish.

WOMEN'S

  • Kelsey Landra finished third in the Heptathlon on Day 2 with a score of 4406 picking up the first six points of the meet for the Lady Cards
  • Angelina Delbosque placed second on the podium with a time of 12.08 in the 100m dash finals. Delbosque scored eight crucial points in the team's improvement to second place.
  • Lauren Buckner continued to show off in the 1500m run with a third place finish in a time of 4:27.86 which hits an NCAA Division II Provisional Mark and scored six points for the team.
  • Lynsey Amthor placed second in the 10,000m run on Day 2 while picking up eight points and clocking 36:42.46.
  • Cassandra Campbell joined her teammate, Williamson, on the podium for the 100m hurdle finals finishing third. Campbell finished her race in 14.03 seconds which is another NCAA Division II Provisional Mark. Campbell's day was not over yet though where she picked up her second, third place finish of the day and second NCAA DII Provisional Mark of the afternoon in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.68.
  • The 4x100 Relay team of Autumn Morris, Angelina Delbosque, Cassandra Campbell, and Cheyenne Williamson placed third blazing to a 47.14 second finish.
  • The 4x400 team of Kelsey Landra, Sophia Thelen, Makayla Fuerst, and Lauren Buckner placed second in the final track event of the meet with a time of 3:54.76 which picked up the final six points for the team.

UP NEXT

The two squad will travel to the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships @ Colorado State University in Pueblo, Colorado for a three day meet starting on May 25 and going through May 27.
