Men's Track and Field Sits Second After Day 2 of GLIAC Championships

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Men's Track and Field team sits in third after the first full day of competition at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Davenport University.

FINALS

10,000 Meter

The men's squad was highlighted by an individual championship from senior, Thomas Hufton in the 10,000m run with a time of 30:45.24. Hufton placed second in the 5000m during the indoor track season and has been a continuous improver throughout his four years on the cross country team.

3000m Steeple

Noah Verlinde picked up a point for the men's team in the event with a time of 9:42.44 and an eighth place finish overall.

Hammer Throw

Clarence Corbett picked up five points for the men's squad with a toss of 50.66m (166' 2") on his second attempt. Corbett was joined by teammate Andrew Quinn who finished in sixth place with a heave of 48.17m (58' 00") good for three points.

Pole Vault

Freshman, Wilson Tschirhart,placed fifth in the event picking up 4 points with a vault of 4.51m (14' 9.5")

High Jump

Freshman, Ryan Brenner, placed fifth in the event with a jump of 1.90m (6' 2.75"). Brenner tied with fourth place in terms of height jumped but took more attempts.

Javelin

The Cardinals picked up all-conference honors in the Javelin with Junior, Trevin Phillips coming in second place with a throw of 61.33m (201' 3"). Freshman, Ryan Brenner came in fourth place adding to his point total for the meet. Graham Jones also picked up two points in the event with a seventh place finish throwing 45.89m (150' 7").

 

PRELIMS

1500m

The distance squad kept it rolling in the 1500 where the Cardinals saw two qualifiers for the finals tomorrow in freshman, Jack Lobodzinski and Senior, Eric Niestroy. The two finished in sixth and 11th place respectively clocking 4:00.21 and 4:01.74.

110m Hurdles

In the 110m hurdles, Nathan Furst and Alex Stoll qualified for tomorrows finals

400m Run

Tyler Burrell placed third in qualifying putting him in a great spot to medal tomorrow afternoon.

800m Run

Two men will compete for the GLIAC Championship in the 800m run tomorrow. SVSU will be respresented by David Furguson and Brendan Nesbitt. Furguson moved up five places in the final 400 meters of the race to place first in the qualifying heat.

400m Hurdles

Junior, Seth Oxer continued his impressive stint in the 400m hurdles where he qualified for the finals with a fifth place finish

200m Run

Kabanu Witherspoon and Quin Broussard picked up qualifying times in the event with times of 21.70 and 21.83 good for the four and six seed tomorrow.

The final day of the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place tomorrow. The finals will be hosted for all of the events listed above and others that can be found on the live results link on the SVSU Athletics Composite Schedule.
