Provisionals and Personal Bests Set the Tone for Track & Field in California

AZUSA, Calif. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams traveled across the country to the Cal State LA Twilight meet and the Bryan Clay Invitational. The Cardinals looked to build off of their already impressive opening to the 2023 outdoor track season by competing with some of the top track programs in the country across all divisions of the NCAA. SVSU set multiple NCAA provisional marks and personal bests throughout the trip. 

 

Cal State LA Twilight 

 

Men's 

Sprints 

Nathan Furst highlighted the sprints for SVSU's men placing fifth in the 110 hurdles blazing to a 14.53 (1.2 wind). Kabanu Witherspoon added in the 100m dash for the Cardinals, running a 11.30 (.8 wind) finishing 23rd overall. Tyler Burrell joined Witherspoon with a 23rd place finish in the 200m dash clocking 23.07 seconds (.9 wind) setting a new personal best in the event. 

Distance 

The men's distance squad had themselves a day in the 800m run with Brenden Nesbitt, Eric Niestroy, and David Ferguson placing fourth through sixth and running 1:55.51, 1:55.67, and 1:57.97 respectively.  

Field Events 

Trevin Phillips led the way for the men in the field events heaving his third javelin toss 64.51m (211' 8") which was good enough for an NCAA Provisional mark and took the crown by over 30 feet. Andrew Quinn added to the NCAA Provisional marks for the Cardinals placing third in the shot put throwing 16.57m (54' 4.5") giving him access to the national finals. Clarence Corbett rounded out the meet for the field events with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (15.81m) and a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw (53.56m) 

Women's 

Sprints 

Cassandra Campbell highlighted the women's sprints with a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles clocking 14.13 (0.6 wind) hitting a NCAA Provisional mark which qualifies her for the National Championships in May. Hanna Schroeder also raced in the 100 hurdles in the second section of the race and finished eighth overall finishing in 14.89 (0.6 wind). Angelina Delbosque clocked a 12.08 (1.0 wind) in the 100m dash, good enough for a fifth-place finish. 

Field Events 

MacKenzie Ramey finished fifth in the shot put with a heave of 12.01m (39' 5"), additionally, she placed 14th in the hammer throw with her second throw of 48.68 in the event. Ramey rounded out her evening with a 17th place finish in the discus with a throw of 35.81m (117' 6").

Men's 

Sprints 

Kabanu Witherspoon got things started in the 200m dash for the Cardinals, setting a new personal best with a time of 22.02 seconds (1.5 wind). Witherspoon placed 63rd in the race but was one of the top non-division one competitors. Tyler Burrell finished 49th in the 400m dash, finishing just two hundredths of a second off of his personal best set at the GLIAC Championships for Indoor Track in February. Nathan Furst added to his impressive weekend with an 11th place finish in the 110 hurdles with high winds, clocking 14.55 (2.5 wind).  

Distance 

Brendan Nesbitt built from his impressive time at the Cal State LA Twilight with an NCAA Provisional mark in the 800m run with a 1:51.45 placing eighth overall while also setting a new personal best. Thomas Hufton added to the impressive distance showing in the 10000m run hitting an NCAA Provisional standard with a time of 30:04.99 and setting a new best for the senior. Hufton bested multiple division one programs in the race.  

Field Events 

Clarence Corbett took second place in the shot put on his fifth attempt, tossing his shot 16.13m (52' 11"). Corbett added to his meet with a 15th place finish in the hammer throw heaving the hammer 53.27m. Trevin Phillips looked to capitalize off of his win just a day earlier in the Javelin throw. The junior finished sixth overall throwing 58.42m  

Decathlon 

Freshman, Ryan Brenner continued an extremely impressive multi's showing hitting the NCAA Provisional mark in the decathlon scoring 6991 points over his ten events. Brenner set new personal bests in the 110 hurdles, 100m, 400m, and 1500m runs. Additionally, he added personal bests in the Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin Throws. Brenner won the decathlon at the meet for group c, besting out competitors from all different divisions. 

Women's 

Sprints 

Angelina Delbosque kicked off the sprints for the women's squad placing 38th overall after setting her personal best just days before at the Cal State LA Twilight meet. Delbosque clocked a 12.21 (0.6 wind). She added a 54th place finish in the 200m dash as well. Cassaandra Campbell found herself in the 100 and 400 hurdles at the meet, Campbell set a new best in the 400 hurdles running a 1:02.63 in the event for a 27th place finish.  

Distance 

Alexa Keiser continued her impressive outdoor season notching a NCAA provisional mark in the 1500m run with a time of 4:31.31. Keiser added to her provo mark with a personal best in the steeplechase with a 76th place finish in 10:47.63. Karissa Picard added a 23rd place finish in the 1500m run clocking 4:39 and a 49th place finish in the 800m run finishing in 2:14.33, both are personal bests for Picard. Kailee Sandoval also added new personal bests to her resume in the 800m and 1500m run with times of 2:16.13 and 4:48.21 respectively. 

Heptathlon 

National Champion, Cheyenne Williamson got her outdoor season started by competing in the heptathlon in Group A. Williamson placed fifth overall scoring 5595 points which included hitting a NCAA provisional mark for the national championships in May.  

Kelsey Landra set a new personal best in the heptathlon scoring 4099 points placing 12th overall while also setting new personal bests in the 100 hurdles and the 200m run throughout the event.
